Nature & Climate Language

Earth

The planet is Earth. Soil is earth.

Nature

Capitalize Nature when it is personified. Use lowercase nature in general use.

Mother Earth

Always capitalize Mother Earth.

global heating

Use global heating instead of global warming when possible.

climate migrant

Atmos generally prefers "climate migrant," unless another term is used intentionally.

Ocean

Use oceans for specific oceans. Use ocean when referring to the ocean generally.

Species names

Capitalize the genus in scientific Latin names. Common species names stay lowercase unless they include a proper noun.

Plants and animals

Use more specific language for native, endemic, non-native, or introduced species.

Grammar & Voice Notes

Hyphens

Generally avoid hyphens.

Atmos

Always italicize Atmos.

every day / everyday

Use "every day" to mean each day. Use "everyday" as an adjective.

pipeline

Use lowercase pipeline when referencing specific projects.

nonbinary

No hyphen.

Asian American

No hyphen.

Gases

Use gases, per AP style.

Language & Care

BIPOC

Acceptable when referring to communities of color broadly, but specificity is preferred when possible.

Mental health

Use person-first language and avoid terms that evoke pity.

survivor / victim

"Survivor" is the default, but preference should be respected.

Black / Brown / white

Capitalize Black and Brown. Do not capitalize white.
